Glossary
Facial analysis glossary
Definitions of the clinical terms used in Facet's scoring engine and in modern facial aesthetics literature. Each term includes the definition, how it is measured, its clinical or aesthetic significance, normal range, and how Facet uses it.
Canthal tilt
Canthal tilt is the angle of the line between the inner and outer corners of the eye. Positive tilt is the aesthetic ideal. Definition, measurement, normal range, and clinical use.
Midface ratio
Midface ratio is the proportion of the midface (brow to nose base) to other facial thirds. Definition, measurement, normal range, and how Facet scores midface proportion.
Goode index
The Goode index is the standard clinical measure of nasal tip projection. Definition, measurement, normal range, and how it relates to rhinoplasty planning.
Fitzpatrick skin type
Fitzpatrick skin type classifies skin by UV response on a 6-point scale. Definition, the 6 types, and how skin type informs skincare and aesthetic treatment decisions.
Facial symmetry
Facial symmetry is the bilateral correspondence between the left and right halves of the face. Definition, measurement, and how symmetry correlates with perceived attractiveness.
Nasal tip projection
Nasal tip projection is how far the tip of the nose extends from the face. Definition, measurement (Goode method), normal range, and use in rhinoplasty planning.
Intercanthal distance
Intercanthal distance is the distance between the inner corners of the eyes. Definition, measurement, normal range, and what it indicates clinically.
Vermilion border
The vermilion border is the boundary between the lip color and surrounding skin. Definition, age-related changes, and clinical relevance for lip aesthetics.
Gonial angle
Gonial angle is the angle at the back of the jawbone where the mandible meets the vertical ramus. Definition, normal range, and significance for jaw definition.
Facial Width-Height Ratio (FWHR)
FWHR is the ratio of bizygomatic width to upper-facial height. Definition, measurement, and what FWHR indicates about perceived dominance and gender presentation.
Nasolabial angle
The nasolabial angle is the angle between the upper lip and columella of the nose. Definition, measurement, normal range, and rhinoplasty implications.
Mandibular plane angle
Mandibular plane angle is the angle of the lower jaw relative to the cranial base. Definition, normal range, and what it indicates about facial growth pattern.
Philtrum length
Philtrum length is the distance from the nose base to the upper lip. Definition, normal range, age-related changes, and clinical relevance for lip lift procedures.
Facial thirds
Facial thirds is the classical proportion rule dividing the face into three equal vertical sections. Definition, the three thirds, and use in cosmetic analysis.
Golden ratio (facial)
The facial golden ratio is the application of the 1.618 mathematical ratio to facial proportions. Definition, the controversy, and how it is actually used in aesthetics.
