What is goode index?
Last updated: May 22, 2026
The Goode index measures nasal tip projection as a ratio: the distance from the alar-facial junction to the nasal tip, divided by the distance from the nasion (root of the nose) to the nasal tip. Goode's published 1984 ideal ratio is 0.55 to 0.60 for a well-proportioned nose. Above 0.60 indicates over-projection; below 0.55 indicates under-projection.
How goode index is measured
Measured from a profile (side-view) photograph. Two key landmark distances are drawn: nasion to nasal tip, and alar-facial junction to nasal tip. The latter is divided by the former. Requires a true profile view with the head level for accurate measurement.
Why goode index matters
Goode index is one of the most-used measurements in rhinoplasty planning. Over-projection or under-projection can be addressed surgically via tip plasty, columellar strut placement, or tip de-projection. The Goode ideal is widely accepted as the target for tip projection in primary rhinoplasty.
Normal range
Ideal: 0.55 to 0.60. Acceptable range: 0.50 to 0.65. Outside this range typically indicates structural over-projection or under-projection of the nasal tip.

How Facet uses goode index
Facet does not currently measure the Goode index because it requires a profile (side) view photograph and Facet's primary analysis uses front-facing photos. Goode index measurement is on the V3 roadmap pending the profile-CV pipeline.
Frequently asked
Why does Facet not measure Goode index yet?+
The Goode index requires a profile view of the face. Facet's primary analysis uses one front-facing photo (optional profile photos are not yet fully analyzed). The profile-CV pipeline is on the V3 roadmap. When it ships, Goode and other profile-only nose parameters will be included in the nose module.
Is Goode index the only measure of nose projection?+
No. Other measurements include the nasofacial angle, nasolabial angle, and Crumley nasal projection. Goode is the most-used because the ideal ratio is well-validated across populations and the measurement is straightforward from a profile photo.
