What is facial width-height ratio (fwhr)?

Last updated: May 22, 2026

Facial Width-Height Ratio (FWHR) is the ratio of bizygomatic (cheekbone-to-cheekbone) width to upper-facial height (typically measured from brow line to upper lip line). FWHR has been the subject of substantial research correlating higher FWHR with perceived dominance, aggression in some studies, and gender presentation. The gender-neutral midpoint is approximately 1.85.

How facial width-height ratio (fwhr) is measured

Measured by dividing bizygomatic width by upper-facial height. Both measurements are typically taken in millimeters from a front-facing photograph with IPD calibration. The ratio is unitless.

Why facial width-height ratio (fwhr) matters

FWHR is widely studied in social psychology research as a predictor of perceived personality traits. Higher FWHR (wider faces relative to height) correlates with more masculine-perceived features and in some studies with perceived dominance. The correlations are modest but consistent across multiple studies.

Normal range

Adult male typical: 1.85 to 2.10. Adult female typical: 1.70 to 1.90. The gender-neutral midpoint is approximately 1.85. Beyond 2.20 the face begins to read distinctly wide; below 1.65 distinctly narrow.

How Facet uses facial width-height ratio (fwhr)

Facet measures FWHR as the primary parameter for the jawline module from a front-facing photograph. The scoring engine compares the measurement against gender-typical ranges.

Frequently asked

Does higher FWHR really predict dominance or aggression?+

FWHR-dominance correlations have been replicated in multiple studies but the effect size is modest. The relationship is not deterministic. Many low-FWHR individuals are highly dominant and many high-FWHR individuals are not. FWHR is one of dozens of factors that contribute to first-impression perception.

Can FWHR be changed?+

Bone structure FWHR is fixed in adults. Perceived FWHR can shift slightly through cosmetic interventions: buccal fat removal can narrow the face visually; cheek augmentation can widen it; jaw implants can lengthen the lower face.
