Eyebrow analysis: how Facet scores your brows

Last updated: May 22, 2026

Facet's eyebrow module measures six parameters in IPD-calibrated millimeters: pupil-to-brow distance, peak rise, apex angle, length, thickness, and symmetry. Each parameter is scored against the Carruthers 2020 brow ideal, the standard clinical reference for cosmetic brow assessment. The output is a 0 to 10 score plus targeted recommendations for grooming, shaping, or clinical intervention.

Why this matters

Eyebrows frame the eyes, define expression, and account for a disproportionate share of perceived facial attractiveness. Subtle changes (a millimeter of peak rise, a few degrees of apex angle) materially alter the read of a face. Brows are also one of the highest-ROI areas to improve because grooming, shaping, and microblading all deliver visible results in days, not months.

What your eyebrows score means

Score bandMeaning
8.0 to 10Excellent. Within 2 millimeters of the Carruthers ideal on all parameters.
6.5 to 7.9Good. Within 4 millimeters on most parameters. Minor grooming can lift to excellent.
5.0 to 6.4Average. One or two parameters off by 5+ millimeters. Professional shaping recommended.
3.5 to 4.9Below average. Multiple parameters off. Consider microblading or professional shaping.
0 to 3.4Significant asymmetry or shape issues. Professional brow specialist consultation recommended.

How to improve your eyebrows score

  • Stop plucking the lower edge unless you have professional shaping reference points. Most amateur over-plucking happens on the bottom edge.
  • If peak rise scores low, grow brows out for 8 to 12 weeks before any shaping decision. Castor oil nightly is a low-risk regrowth aid.
  • Apex angle issues are best addressed by a professional brow stylist who can see how the brow should arch relative to your specific orbital structure.
  • Symmetry below 7 out of 10 typically benefits from microblading or hybrid brows. The procedure addresses density and shape simultaneously.
  • Document with a controlled front-facing photo monthly. Brow protocols give visible feedback fast.

Frequently asked

What is the Carruthers brow ideal?+

Carruthers 2020 is a clinical reference paper that codified the aesthetic ideal for female and male brows: pupil-to-brow distance, peak position, apex angle, and brow head-to-tail tangent. Facet uses these as the per-parameter scoring thresholds.

Are male and female brows scored differently?+

Yes. The Carruthers ideal has gender-specific baselines. Male brows typically score better at lower peak rise and a flatter apex angle; female brows score better with more arch.

Does Facet recommend microblading or surgery?+

Recommendations are tiered: natural protocols (growth oils, brow gel, professional shaping) come first. Clinical protocols (microblading, hybrid brows, brow lift surgery) appear only when scores indicate structural issues that cosmetic intervention cannot fully address.

How accurate are brow measurements from a single photo?+

IPD calibration anchors all measurements to a known distance (your inter-pupillary distance), so brow measurements are reproducible at sub-millimeter precision from a single front-facing photo with adequate lighting.
