Beard analysis: how Facet scores your beard
Last updated: May 22, 2026
Facet's beard module (males only) currently uses Claude visual assessment to score beard density, coverage, and overall quality. A dedicated CV pipeline for stubble length and coverage ratio is deferred to V3. Recommendations cover grooming, growth optimization, and clinical options (minoxidil applied topically to beard area, microneedling) for patchy or thin beards.
Why this matters
Beard structure is a strong masculine secondary sex characteristic and a defining facial framing feature for men who can grow one. Patchy or thin beards are a common cosmetic concern. Beard growth can be modestly improved through nutritional optimization, topical minoxidil (off-label use), and microneedling, though genetic ceiling matters.
Parameters measured
| Parameter | Units | Citation | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual beard density and coverage | Claude visualScore | Visual qualitative | 0 to 10 scale by qualitative assessment |
| Stubble length (deferred) | Millimeters | V3 roadmap | Requires CV pipeline |
| Coverage ratio (deferred) | Percentage of cheek/chin area | V3 roadmap | Requires CV pipeline |
What your beard score means
| Score band | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 8.0 to 10 | Excellent. Full, well-distributed beard coverage. |
| 6.5 to 7.9 | Good. Solid beard coverage with minor patchy areas or density variation. |
| 5.0 to 6.4 | Average. Beard coverage moderate; styling choices matter for visual quality. |
| 3.5 to 4.9 | Below average. Significant patchiness. Stubble or designed-stubble styles may be more flattering than full beard. |
| 0 to 3.4 | Limited beard growth. Clean-shaven typically more flattering than attempting a thin beard. |
How to improve your beard score
- Genetic ceiling matters most. Some men cannot grow full beards regardless of intervention.
- Topical minoxidil 5% applied to the beard area (off-label use) has modest evidence for stimulating beard growth in 60 to 70% of users at 4 to 6 months.
- Microneedling (0.25mm to 0.5mm derma roller) applied to the beard area weekly can stimulate follicle activity. Modest effects, low risk.
- Nutritional sufficiency (protein, vitamin D, B-complex) supports overall hair growth including beard.
- Style for what you have: well-designed stubble or short beard tends to look better than a sparse longer beard. Consult a skilled barber.
- Beard transplant is a surgical option for permanently restoring patchy areas. Outcomes depend on donor hair availability and surgeon skill.
Frequently asked
Why is beard scored only for males?+
The beard module is gender-conditional based on the gender you select at scan time. Female users do not see a beard score in their report.
Can I make my beard fuller?+
Modestly, yes. Topical minoxidil 5% applied to the beard area, microneedling, and nutritional optimization can improve density in 60 to 70% of users over 4 to 6 months. Genetic ceiling sets a maximum that cannot be exceeded with these interventions.
Should I get a beard transplant?+
Beard transplants are a real option for permanent restoration of patchy areas. Outcomes depend on donor hair availability and surgeon experience. Costs typically range from $3,000 to $8,000. Get multiple consultations.
Is clean-shaven sometimes the better choice?+
Yes. A sparse or patchy beard often looks worse than a clean-shaven face. Stubble (3 to 5 day growth) is an intermediate option that adds masculinity without exposing patchiness.
