Facial thirds: what the equal-proportions rule gets wrong

Every aesthetics guide repeats the same rule: divide the face into three equal thirds. The largest anthropometric study to actually measure real faces found the thirds are not equal, and the gap is consistent enough to matter. Here is what it found and how Facet scores proportion instead.

Facial thirds is the proportion rule you have seen even if you never learned its name: divide the face horizontally at the hairline, the brow line, the nose base, and the chin, and the classical ideal says the three resulting sections, upper, middle, and lower, should come out equal. It gets taught in art schools, repeated in cosmetic surgery consultations, and used as a quick visual check in makeup and grooming content.

It is also, per the largest study to actually measure it, not how real faces are proportioned on average. Here is where the rule comes from, what happened when it was tested against measured faces, and what Facet scores instead of a fixed 33 percent target.

Where the rule comes from

Equal facial thirds traces back to classical Greek and Renaissance ideas about proportion in the human figure, later formalized into a set of "neoclassical canons" used in art instruction and, eventually, in facial plastic surgery planning. The appeal is the same as most classical proportion rules: a single, easy-to-teach ratio that claims to define a balanced face regardless of who is looking at it.

The rule is still a reasonable planning heuristic. Surgeons use it to reason about how a procedure in one third, a chin advancement or a brow lift, shifts the visual balance of the other two. The question is whether "equal" is actually the empirical average, or just the assumption the heuristic was built on.

What happened when it was measured

Farkas, Hreczko, Kolar, and Munro answered that question directly in a 1985 study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, measuring nine neoclassical canons, including the equal-thirds rule, against 153 young adult North American Caucasian subjects. It remains one of the most cited anthropometric facial studies in the plastic surgery literature.

The vertical proportions were the weakest-performing canons in the entire set. On the average face in the sample, the lower third ran longer than the middle third, and in 68 percent of subjects the difference was at least 9mm, not a rounding error at typical face heights. The two canons that held up best in the study were both horizontal, not vertical: interorbital width matching nose width, and nose width matching roughly a quarter of total face width. The proportion most people have actually heard of, equal vertical thirds, was among the least reliable.

A separate line of work adds a second problem with treating 33 percent as universal. A 2022 systematic raw-data analysis in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, from the Department of Plastic Surgery at UC Irvine, pooled neoclassical-canon measurements across populations and found meaningful interethnic variability, with the largest spread in forehead height, intraocular distance, and nasal width. A canon built from one population's averages does not travel cleanly to another's.

Why the rule persists anyway

  • It is easy to demonstrate. Four horizontal lines on a photo is a fast visual and does not require a caliper or a landmark model to eyeball.
  • It predates the anthropometric data that would have corrected it, and the correction has not fully displaced the original teaching in casual use.
  • "Equal thirds" is a one-sentence rule. "The lower third runs longer than the middle third by a population-dependent margin" is accurate but does not fit on a slide.
  • A rule that is approximately true, off by single-digit millimeters on an average face, is close enough for most casual visual checks, which is part of why it survived this long without being retested.

What Facet measures instead

Facet's overall harmony module measures the same four landmarks, hairline, brow line, nose base, chin, but scores the resulting proportions against gender and ethnicity-keyed population bands rather than a flat 33 percent target for every face. A lower third that runs longer than the middle third is not automatically penalized, because the anthropometric data says that is closer to typical than a perfectly equal split.

Midface ratio, a related but distinct measurement of the middle third against the other two, gets its own scoring pass for the same reason: proportion rules that assume one universal ideal tend to break down exactly where real measurement starts.
